Reading Glasses for Screen Time

Many of us who are parents are well aware of “screen time,” in which we limit the amount of time our children sit in front of a screen, be it a television, portable DVD player, gaming device, or computer.  The idea is to ensure they don’t spend too much time in a sedentary position.  However, as adults, we can’t always follow our own rules.  Many of us work in front of a computer screen all day by necessity.  Thus we can’t exactly limit our own screen time.  I will suggest that part of an adult “screen time” be to include a pair of reading glasses if necessary.  I know many people who only wear readers for work- they got tired of squinting at the screen, as well a she resulting headaches and eye strain.

Check out these fantastic reading glasses that won’t cramp your style…actually they’ll enhance it.

Last week we talked about what people look for in their reading glasses, focusing on style.  Most people said that since they wear their readers a lot, they need to be cute and trendy.  However, most people also said they looked for value.  No one wants to pay more than they have to.  And along the same lines, since so many wear their glasses frequently, they like to have several pairs, thus necessitating value.  If you don’t want one pair of expensive glasses, then you definitely don’t want three pairs of expensive glasses.  However, you don’t want super-cheapy glasses that will fall apart in weeks.  That said, why not get style and value?  Check out the following frames that are both cute and affordable.

I recently did a Facebook post to poll my reading-glass wearers on what they look for in reading glasses?  Obviously, we all want to see.  That is first and foremost.  But beyond vision, what do people look for in their frames?  Here’s what I got on style:

  • I wear glasses all the time, so style is the most important. The last thing one wants to look like is geekish.
  • I went for style over value.
  • The style is pretty important since I wear them all the time.
This is from a 40-year old male, a 30 year old female, and a 13-year old female.  Style matters, and I have to agree that if you need glasses all the time, why not get a pair {or two!} that you love?  It’s important to find frames that accentuate your features without crowding out your face.  If you wear a ton of patterns or bold colors, you might want to tone it down a bit so that your frames are more versatile.  Maybe choose a cool shape with toned down colors.

Still a bit of color and a great shape.

On the flip side, if you wear a lot of solids or black, take a risk and try a colored frame.

For some of us, glasses have been part of our lives since we were children.  For others, they were introduced for school or driving when we didn’t pass a test.  For others, glasses made an entrance as we got older and needed the extra clarity.  Regardless of when we started wearing glasses, many of us don’t have a great affinity for having to wear and keep them around all the time.

It can be frustrating to only need reading glasses and thus forget to bring them along outside of the house.  There are several solutions to this:

  1. Wear them.  There are tons of super-trendy accessories to keep your readers handy at all times.  Pick one that suits your tastes and try it out.  Chances are, you’ll get lots of compliments.
  2. Get a case.  Not everyone is comfortable wearing their glasses on a necklace.  Thus, another option is a hard or soft case that you can pop in your purse, brief case, or even pocket for some.  Some “cases” even double as an evening handbag!
  3. Try lightweight or small/mini frames. Try half-frames- that way, your frames aren’t too bulky or irritating to carry even in a pants pocket or shirt pocket.  They offer the same strength as the full frame readers, but just without all the bulk.

As you’re getting used to buying reading glasses, the main thing to keep in mind is to check for the lens size as well as the suitable lens grade of your reading glasses in order to avoid vision problems in the future. On a practical note, also be careful when buying a pair with too many moving parts, such as folding hinges, as this tends to increase the chance of breakage with use.

It may seem that ending the day with a headache is inevitable.  However, there are actually some things you can do to alleviate work-induced headaches.

Tips to reduce neck and shoulder tension, and prevent work-induced headaches:

Many work-related or -induced headaches come from bad posture and eye strain!  It’s hard to believe, but just being more thoughtful about how you sit and even look at your computer can dramatically reduce your headaches.

  • Correct your posture: Here are a few quick posture fixes that put less strain on your muscles, including your shoulders and neck, which probably are related to your headaches.  1- Make sure your lower back is well supported, or add portable lumbar support . 2- Move your keyboard about two inches above your lap, slightly sloped away from your body. An adjustable keyboard tray helps keep everything where it should be. 3- Move your armrests out of the way while typing; either lower them, or move them to the side in order to prevent the tendency to raise your shoulders while typing.
  • Move Your Computer Screen:  A poorly-placed computer screen affects your neck and eyes.  Straining to see the screen overworks your neck and shoulder muscles, and often results in pain or aches.  To fix this problem, try these 3 tips:  1) Your monitor should be straight in front of you, centered on your body. 2) When sitting back in your chair, the front of your computer screen should be about 15 inches or an arm’s-length away from your eyes, where you can easily read without leaning forward or backward. 3) Make sure your monitor is directly at eye level; try adding a monitor or desk riser to increase to an appropriate height. You should never have to look up or down at your screen.
  • Use a document holder:  Nothing is more frustrating (or less effective) than having to look back and forth from your screen to your notes or documents.  Besides being inefficient, this action puts strain on your neck and eyes because your poor eyes have to keep re-focusing.  Try a document holder, and put it right next to your screen to eliminate excessive movements.
  • Try reading glasses.  Many people who don’t need glasses out of work just might benefit from a good pair of reading glasses for computer work.  Reading glasses can help you from squinting at the screen and help you feel less achey after a long stretch of computer work.

Work-induced headaches are wearisome and significantly impact concentration and productivity. These helpful ergonomic tips and a good pair of reading glasses can help reduce the muscle strain that often causes these headaches. Take the time to adjust your habits and equipment to prevent further pain or injury.

Project Runway is known for eclectic fashion designers, and Mondo Guerra is no exception.    Interestingly, many designers fail to wear the kind of signature looks they’re famous for.  Maybe they put all their effort into what they design, and have little left for their own imperfect bodies? On the contrary, from leiderhosen to bow ties, Mondo rocks his own style every day.   He seems to be overflowing with ideas, color, and patterns for both himself and his sketch pad.  The results are phenomenal and worth a second look, including his second season on the show.

And now onto Mondo…

The 33-year-old Guerra, who’s known for brightly colored designs, a sometimes prickly attitude that has endeared him to some viewers, and a social conscience that has endeared him to even more viewers, has been the clear favorite to take this best-of-the-best series, winning more design challenges (four) than any other contestant.

Let’s check out his frames, ‘cuz this is a reading glasses site.  To get this look, you need only replicate the frames, which is easy to do with these fantastic designer reading glasses.  Check out the Kendall- available in 4 colors and custom made for you!

Whether or not he can carry a tune past the next few weeks remains to be seen, but most can agree that we love HeeJun Han on American Idol!  He’s funny, he’s flirty but faithful to his girlfriend, he’s sweet, and he has a great style.

Let’s be honest- guys just don’t have that many accessorizing options: a well-tied scarf {which we all know can backfire}, jewelry {don’t even get me started on guys who wear necklaces}, layering clothing {now a trendy blazer does do wonders}, and glasses.  As you know, I am a fan of designer reading glasses, especially for men for the very reason I just mentioned- men just don’t have that many choices.  Thus, it’s essential to maximize what they do have, and an easy way to do that is well-chosen frames.  Speaking of well-chosen frames, check out HeeJun’s.  Classic black-rimmed frames that work for almost any face shape.  Plus, eye-catching frames add a sparkle of personality for anyone!

There’s no denying that Paul Rudd has his own distinct look.  I first noticed him in Clueless, and he has starred in numerous roles since.  I am a married woman, so I will refrain from saying more.  However, most anyone can say his look is attention-getting.  There’s a lot to discuss, and I’ll admit I am not a fan of this tie, but from the hand in the hair to the tucked-in shirt to the dark frames, it’s a good look.

An eye-catching  accessory Rudd is rockin’ out is the strong frames.  They’re dark, fairly thick, and great for his angular, somewhat oblong face.  If you’d like a similar look for your man, yourself, or just someone you know, check out these great frames:

Women aren’t the only ones making a splash with a signature look.  In fact, men are just as prone to wanting a new look, they just don;t always know where to turn.  We don’t all have Ryan Gosling  to take us through the mall and redirect our gaze to what’s really cool.  That said, we can still turn to our celebrity loves for inspiration and new ideas, even if we don’t get a physical make-over.  Today’s man of the hour is Ted Danson.  I still remember him on Cheers.  I love that he is still going strong, especially with his new role as the grave shift supervisor for CSI: Las Vegas.

Pretty smooth, right?  Here’s the key to those frames: thick, dark frames that are close to the eye line, but still are a bit wide.  Check out some options for you.

New Girl is hard not to love…Jess {Zooey Deschanel} is a lovable, free-spirited “new girl” to an apartment of men.  As roommates, they help each other through the awkwardness of fledgling relationships and heart-wrenching break-ups, not to mention their own strange encounters.  The great thing about Jess is her style- she’s flirty, bouncy, and colorfully fun.  Jess has something we all want: a great look.  From her qwirky outfits to her enormous frames, Jess is like a brightly colored bauble we can’t help but admire.

Want a great look like Jess?  Why not try these on for size?  They’re all over-sized, which are great for almost anyone of any stature.
